Lutheran parishes hither and yon are yoking themselves to American Evangelicalism in worship, administration, outlook, and, most importantly, in language. To help you navigate the new world we happily present our first Gottesdienst the Game Show game: Roller Coaster or Worship Service? where you try to determine if a given word refers to a roller coaster or an actual worship service in an actual church somewhere in America. Try to imagine Dr. Eckardt, dressed as Gandalf the White, reading this list of names and saying, "Roller Coaster or Worship Service?" after each. I affirm that I am not making of any of these up. Note your answers and then have fun Googling...
The Voyage
The Ultimate
Fuel
Rage
Untamed
Maverick
Collide
Overcome
GateKeeper
Full Throttle
Venture
Desparation
Jubilee Odyssey

I would safely venture they are all worship service names and some (and maybe all) are also roller coaster names.
ReplyDeleteRule clarification: Is there an "LCMS Youth Gathering theme" wildcard in play, or is that only for the bonus speed-round?
ReplyDeleteWell, if I recall correctly the entire Gathering is deemed a worship event.
ReplyDeleteWait; isn't Rage a Roller Coaster?
ReplyDelete- Gandalf
All Roller Coaster names were found on Wikipedia if that helps...
ReplyDeleteEvery non-roller-coaster on the list could be subtitled "Desperation," considering that word's etymology.
ReplyDeleteI'm surprised The Demon isn't on the list. That would've been a tough guess for those who live outside Chicagoland.
Who says the LCMS and Rollercoasters aren't creative? Here's some I've found:
ReplyDeleteJourney
Climax
Water's Edge
Extreme
Extreme Makeover
Radical
I'll take Extreme Makeover for 500, Alec ... and a whole lot of Antivert.
ReplyDeleteAnd a barf-bag.
Now.
