Superfluity of Naughtiness - Lay It Aside

We use the DDSB for our weekday Services. It is great and I enjoy reading from the KJV. But I stumble over this every year: “Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls.” (James 1:21, KJV 1900)

What is your "favorite" KJVism?

  1. Rev 14:2

And I heard a voice from heaven, as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of a great thunder: and I heard the voice of harpers harping with their harps:

  2. Matthew 6:34: "Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof."

(Good thing you weren't asking about the Coverdale Psalter ... I would have said "Tush" [v. Ps. 10].)

  3. John 11:39
Jesus said, Take ye away the stone. Martha, the sister of him that was dead, saith unto him, Lord, by this time he stinketh: for he hath been dead four days.

  4. I King 16:11(!) And it came to pass, when he began to reign, as soon as he sat on his throne, that he slew all the house of Baasha: he left him not one that pisseth against a wall, neither of his kinsfolks, nor of his friends.

And here's the thing: the KJV translation is almost always more accurate in tough passages (or in un-PC passages like this) than any other modern version.

  8. KJV isn't the only translation that uses "ass" rather than "donkey," but I always remember giggling as a lad in church whenever I heard about Abraham getting up early and "saddling his ass."

    1. Even worse, "If thou meet thine enemy’s ox or his ass going astray, thou shalt surely bring it back to him again" (Exodus 23:4).

  10. Almost forgot Acts 28:13 -- "And from thence we fetched a compass, and came to Rhegium..."

Mormon missionaries told me that this proved that compasses existed in Biblical times, supposedly validating their organization's assertion that Lehi used a compass to guide him to the new world.

  11. Growing up with parents who taught English 24/7, we also enjoyed the following:

    Ps 46:5 KJV
God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved: God shall help her, and that right early.

    Mark 16:3 KJV
And they said among themselves, Who shall roll us away the stone from the door of the sepulchre?

  12. Gen. 2:18
It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him.

I like this because those who don't know better think "helpmeet" is a word (rather than understanding that "help" means "helper" and "meet" means "suitable) And I guess it is a word, in that you can find it in the dictionary, but it only exists because so many people have read this verse erroneously.
