Ripley's BION: Liturgical Edition

Click above for the summary, or here for the full-blown experience of a "fine, fine opening worship service well within the bounds of the traditional Western rite, and including appropriate diverse forms and aspects," per one district president.

  1. I think that particular DP has a history of delighting in causing offense to his weaker brethren. So, this "divine service" is of course a "fine, fine" thing because it made so many of his brethren uncomfortable and offended.

  2. I looked it over and found an authentic 'blended' service, which is what makes it so insidious. Look, it's got all the elements of traditional worship! -- and yet, it also has the drumbeat of 21st century American tribal customs.

In addition -- this is the second time I have seen this phenomenon this year -- I note the celebrant breaking the host (the fracture) during the consecration, rather than afterwards. Simultaneously some pretty prominent confessional Lutherans of a bygone era turned in their graves.

"fine, fine opening worship service well within the bounds of the traditional Western rite, and including appropriate diverse forms and aspects" This does not make it okay to celebrate a Tridentine Mass (Sacrifice of the Mass, etc.) that follows the Western Rite at the LC-MS Convention. Just because portions of the Western Rite are used doesn't mean all additions to it are acceptable. I hasten to add as to how this fosters the unity of the church when it is clearly outside of AC XXIV "The Mass is held among us and celebrated with the highest reverence. Nearly all the usual ceremonies are also preserved, except the parts sung in Latin are interspersed here and there with German hymns."
I think there is an attempt to get Confessional pastors all riled up about this in order to align them as friends of M. Harrison

  4. Hey, wasn't that video clip of the locomotives crashing used on the intro to MTV's "Headbangers' Ball" in the late 80s?
